Getting into Search Engines

There are 1000s of different search engines you can use and be listed in, but there are three that you must be listed inGoogle, Yahoo and MSN .

Together these three search engines are directly used for 80% of all web searches. Indirectly they are probable responsible for 90-95% of all web searches.

All three major search engines have an Addurl page where you can submit your website for free.

There is absolutely no need to ever pay for a search engine listing!

Once you have added you website to the search engine you then need to wait for the search engine to visit you website and index it.

You must then wait again for the website/pages to show up on Internet searches.

The delay varies with the search engine, but 6 weeks to 6 months are typical for a brand new website.

However the use of the addurl page is not necessary, as there is another and much better way of getting indexed quickly.

You may have noticed ads saying “Get listed in Yahoo, Google, MSN in less than 48 hours”. How is that possible when it normally takes 6 weeks?

Well not only is it possible it is also very easy to do. You see search engines work by actively following links on a site gobbling up web pages on the way and placing them in its index.

When you use the addurl link you go into a queue which gets processed when the engine has time. However if the search engine finds your site itself then in puts it in its index straight away.

So all you need to do is to put your site in the way of the search engine spider. This you do by simply getting a link from an existing quality website. Some sites are spidered by the search engines spiders several times a day others every 1 or two days and others monthly.

This is usually were directories come in to the picture. If you get a listing in a good quality directory like Yahoo then your site will probably be in the main engines in less than 48 hours.

Yahoo is little on the expensive side but there are also many others like Joeant that will serve a similar purpose. There are also free directories that you can use but they tend to take longer to place the link and so you will wait longer to get into the index.

You can find a list on the site http://www.copeconsulting.co.uk/directory-list/

However just because you are in the index it doesn’t mean that you will start to show up on the search results… You won’t. However you are part of the way there.

The search engine now has to classify and grade your site and you can expect about 1 to 2 month delay before you start to get found by people searching.

That is assuming of course that your site is correctly optimised.

So the procedure is.

  • Add site to major search engines either by using the addurl of the search engine or getting a link by being listed in a directory/other web site.
  • Wait until you show in the index ( expect 1 day to 6 weeks)- We will cover how you check that in the next part of the course.
  • Wait until you start to show for search results. -Usually 1-2 months after you first appear in the index for easy searches– We will cover this in a later part of the course.

In the next part we will cover how to use the addurl feature to get into the index.
